It has been mentioned clearly in the Quran that zakah is for 8 categories of people.. Quran(9:60)
People nowadays have made it a trend to collect zakah and use it for running dawah centres, schools, tv channels, from which not exclusively the poor benefit. Whereas the poor is the first category mentioned by Allah in the Quran.
This zakah is used for purposes such as renting offices, transportation expenses of the speakers, and for other luxuries.
The Misconception from the common public here is that, they misunderstand the word "FEE SABEELILLAH" due to its linguistic meaning.
It is an Islamic terminology which means Jihad, sacred fight if needed for the protection of fundamental rights.
The Zakaath which the Centres collect, even if it is for a good cause, they need to ponder whether it is allowed to make a full time career out of it and collect zakah, whereas the sahabah used to work in the morning and do dawah in the evenings.
The people make use of some rare exception given to people in western countries where the population of muslims is extremely low. This exception cannot be used in our place where the people are poor and cannot afford a meal. The people here require basic necessities. They require a support that will take them away from poverty.
The common muslims must start getting aware by consulting such issues with scholars and taking the proper guidance from them.
May Allah guide all of us.
