It is a well-established fact in Islamic Shariah that a man should avoid having any contact with a woman, even for a lawful purpose, unless there is a necessity and with certain conditions.. need not mention the inevitable bad results that occur due to the negligence in this regard.
Hence, it was the custom of Muslims from the time of Sahabah, that the proposals were carried through the trustworthy people to the guardians of the women. Even the proposal of the Prophet ﷺ to the Ummahatul Mumineen was not direct, rather it was carried through a third person. No doubt that this is the safest way to protect ourselves from the trap of Shaytaan and also to avoid any kind of embarrassment or rumors, i.e. (FITNAH).
It is apparent that we are living in a time where all types of temptations and possibilities of Fitnah is more than in any other time.
Therefore, more precautions should be taken while contacting the opposite gender.
In addition to that, those who are in the field of Da’wah or any Islamic field must be very careful while having any contact with the opposite gender, because they are the role model for others. Few matters may come under lawful category, but the religious people are not allowed to do it lest it leads to losing the Taqwa.
It was and is the principle of all the scholars that Taqwa can only be achieved by abstaining from a lot of Mubah (lawful) matters as the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The servant shall not reach the state of being among the Muttaqin until he leaves what there is no harm in, out of caution for its harm." (Al-Tirmidhi 2451)
To conclude, I would like to say that it is a part of piety to avoid having any contact with the opposite gender before the proposal or after it. Chatting through messages or calls, emails are strictly prohibited. And even the necessary messages shouldn't contain any emotional words or emojis whatsoever.
